Keeley'n Spotlight: Mark Musser

Our Civil Group is expanding across the nation and growing rapidly. Keeley’ns are serving more customers than ever before with the same, unmatched dedication to quality and safety. Mark Musser, General Superintendent for the Civil Energy Group, has helped facilitate this growth – evolving his team, his equipment, and our culture.

Mark Musser joined the Keeley family in 2003 and has worked in the field as a Superintendent for 15 years. Over the last 15 years, Mark and his team have formed a strong relationship with one of our trusted partners, helping the Civil Energy Group grow in the energy transmission and distribution industry. This growth has allowed the team to evolve into a self-perform drilling operation providing transmission line and substation foundations for customers across the region. Fostering this relationship over the years and driving exponential growth has given Mark and his team a strong sense of empowerment when they step onto the jobsite every day.

“That is the cool part of what we do in this business. We are empowered to be creative, empowered to be problem solvers, empowered to get the job done. We work closely with engineers to help design and build some of the more challenging projects we take on. There is a great feeling of pride and satisfaction knowing you were part of the solution and construction.”

Mark knew he wanted to join the construction industry as a kid and has always loved building, whether it be a childhood treehouse, or a substation connecting our local neighborhoods. He loves that the work is never monotonous, and the industry is always moving forward and evolving. He is grateful that he has the opportunity to teach and mentor young apprentices the skills and mindset they need to be successful and grow. Seeing the industry and the things he has accomplished has been incredibly rewarding. Mark wants everyone in the industry to feel this way, so if he could give a piece of advice to those just starting out, it would be:

“Be open minded and willing to learn each and every day. Learn with your eyes and ears. There is a great future for craftspeople, so show up to the job every day, work hard, be motivated, and you will be successful.”

Mark has worked with a lot of talented people throughout his career and the most important lesson he has learned is to truly value everyone’s opinions and ask for them. Everyone is part of the team and there is always more than one way to do something. Listening and asking questions makes everyone feel valued, making for a safe, trusted, and productive team. This alignment across his team as they work towards the same goal excites Mark for what is to come. He has a clear vision for the future and is ready to see it come to life!

“I am excited to continue to help the Civil Energy Group grow across the country. I’m looking forward to growing our team and our equipment so we can continue to provide our customers with high-quality projects and service. The sky is the limit here and I’m excited to be part of that continued growth. We self-perform work with over 100 tradespeople and I can’t wait to double that number over the next few years.”

Mark knows that he will stay at Keeley for the rest of his career and he is excited for all those Keeley’ns that have yet to walk through the door. Our teams are growing every day and Keeley is a wonderful place to call home.

Keeley Construction Industrial Group Partners with IKO

Keeley Construction’s Industrial Group is proud to partner with IKO on the construction of a new crushing and coloring plant, supporting the company’s continued growth through a complex, full-scope industrial build. The project includes the construction of multiple buildings, the installation of all equipment & conveyors, and complete site utility work. This project will be delivered on an aggressive 18-month schedule. Keeley’s integrated self-perform teams will execute the work, with the Civil Group handling all civil and concrete scopes and the Steel Erection and Millwright teams leading building erection and equipment installation. “We’re proud to support IKO’s first shingle granular plant in the U.S. and look forward to building a strong, lasting partnership,” said John Herrin, Vice President at Keeley Construction. “Being selected by IKO for this project is a testament to our Industrial Group’s expertise and our ability to safely and efficiently deliver complex industrial work.” IKO emphasized the importance of selecting a trusted partner for this milestone project. “When selecting a contractor for the construction of the Bismarck Granule plant, our team performed a thorough analysis looking for a responsive partner who would be able to successfully execute the project,” said Helen Pejnovich, Regional Manufacturing Director at IKO. “We selected Keeley based on their capability and reputation in the St. Louis area.
